At Float, one of the best ways we help new team members feel supported from day one is through our Onboarding Buddy program. As an Onboarding Buddy, you play a key role in helping a new joiner feel welcomed, connected, and confident during their first six weeks.

This guide will walk you through what’s expected of you (and what’s not!) and how you can make a meaningful impact.

Overview

You were picked because you’re approachable, communicative, and have a great understanding of how Float works. You’ll give the new joiner a cross-departmental perspective that will help them build relationships beyond their immediate team. Your main goal is to help the new joiner settle in, feel part of the team, and know where to go for help.

The Ops team will add you to the new joiner’s Slack onboarding channel and HiBob profile, and you’ll be assigned tasks directly via HiBob.

Your role

Here’s what your role includes:

Day one connect 👋

• Set up a call with the new joiner during their first week to introduce yourself and share a bit about your role and how you’ll support them

Regular syncs 🤝

• Schedule check-ins each week to address their casual questions, give advice, or just have a quick chat about their experience so far

Ongoing check-ins :slack:

• You don’t have to wait for scheduled syncs to touch base. You can check-in via Slack at any point during the week as a friendly face.

Share feedback 📝

• Share any helpful feedback about how things are going or how the new joiner seems to be feeling when their manager asks

What isn’t your role

Your role is as a friendly peer, not a manager or Ops member. You’re not expected to:

• Assign or delegate work
• Provide formal performance feedback to the new joiner
• Replace the manager’s responsibility to guide role-specific onboarding or clarify expectations
• Handle confidential HR or interpersonal concerns as these should be directed to the new joiner’s manager or the Ops team
